What is counselling?

Counselling is an agreed professional piece of work between a qualified counsellor / psychotherapist and the client. It's purpose is to provide a safe, confidential environment to explore the losses, stresses, confusion, conflict and other pain during life crises.

Lorraine's style of counselling is to listen, support and perhaps help with insight to either change what is possible to change, or to live more contentedly and creatively with that which is not. Neither judging or condoning thoughts, feelings or behaviours. Not giving advice, making diagnosis or prognosis or evaluatory reports, nor in any way dis-empowering the client from finding their own solutions to the situation.

The Humanistic Approach

The humanistic approach, is an umbrella term for counselling approaches which values the relationship in the therapeutic encounter; connecting with the client in a compassionate and non-judgemental manner, while respecting the autonomy and resilience of the client. Believing that each client is the holder of their own unique questions and solution, sometimes needing an expert companion on their journey of self discovery. This may involve looking at painful emotions and memories, sometimes feeling worse before feeling an improvement.

Usual Questions

How long does a session last?

The therapeutic session is normally 45 to 50 minutes in duration. Attendance is usually expected to start on time, due to other client commitments.

Does this therapist do phone counselling?

Therapy is normally face to face, this can be negotiated with the therapist.

How long does therapy take?

The length of time of the attendance depends on the needs of the client and will be reviewed and contracted with the therapist. This practice books six weeks in advance and this is to hold the appointment slot for the client. This can be paused by the client at anytime, with notification. Cancellation is 48hrs in advance or full payment is due.

What happens at the first session?

This session is the time when the therapist and client get to know one another and confidentiality is covered. Their agreement of working together is concreted.
